Lest We Forget

In Flanders Fields

John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

This week marks Remembrance Week up here in Canada. Remembrance Day is November 11. Canada, The Countries of the British Commonwealth and The United States view the poppy as the recognized symbol for their war dead. So, take a moment out of your daily lives this week to simply, remember.

Why, Louisa, you know me too well...LOL

Seriously though, yes, I've read the Rilla of Ingleside book, like you, it's almost my favourite book of the series. What's not to like about Rilla's character?

I also think L.M. Montgomery did a great job depicting how life must have been for Canadians waiting for their lovers, brothers, and sons to return from the warfront.

Walter and his poem always does hit home...:(
